about

DARGAR came about as a inside joke between myself and Pete from HARASSOR. We used to joke around about having a band called DARGAR whose name was derived from Marc Singer's character Dar from the film "The Beastmaster", and Sam Elliot's character Gar from the film "Mask". We were going to use photos of the characters as the band photos and we would laugh about it. I had been using Garageband on my Macbook for awhile and was getting pretty comfortable with the application. I got this idea to create some fake drum beats and have Pete improvise guitar and vocals to the rhythms. Then I could sample tiny pieces of the guitar riffs, loop and edit them together and re-program new beats around them to build songs. I did the same with the vocals and the results were these really cool and weird black metal songs. I still feel like this first DARGAR release has a strange, alien quality to it that doesn't sound like anything else. It was a lot of fun for me to work that way, since I had all this raw material to start with it relieved me of some of the creative pressure. The cover image came from the 1968 film "The Devil Rides Out". Pete told me since then that another more prominent band used the same image. I considered changing it but whatever, I still like it. This ended up being the first pro-tape I did on my label with xeroxed covers on silver paper stock. I made 100 copies and it's long gone. ~Horus
